Do you have a bucket list? You know, a list of things you want to do before you depart this earth of ours.
Yesterday I ticked off one item on my list!
My wonderful family (husband, John, sons - Daniel and Thomas and Thomas' fiancé, Renee spent the day with me at our fabulous open plains zoo at Monarto.
My bucket list item? To get up close and personal with some giraffe.
What an experience! Giraffe are my favourite animal - so majestic and graceful. I wanted to spend all day with them. We drove out on a mini bus to a restricted area (only 11 people can go to each session).
As we were getting off the bus we could see the giraffe walking towards the feeding area. We watched as three bull giraffe came right up to the fence line. We were advised not to try and pat them as that would spook them and they would move away. (Of course, they are still wild animals, not tame).
Such gentle creatures - we fed them carrots and yes, their tongues are blue and a bit gooey!
Watching the little kids enjoying the experience was delightful.
Monarto Zoo is participating in conservation programs to save endangered species of animals and plants. Recently, 2 giraffe were born (see photos) they are now 4 1/2 weeks and 6 1/2 weeks old. Very cute!
I've shared some of my favourite shots from the day.
